Savannah King, Student Union President 2015 - 2016
My name is Savannah, and I feel very privileged to have been elected as the Student Union President for 2015/16. I adored being a student here at Winchester, and now am so excited to have the opportunity to strive to make the time that all students spend here the best as possible!
It is my job to represent Winchester students by liaising with staff members from across the University, as well as other Student Unions and organisations both locally and nationally. I will sit on a number of committees and forums to ensure that the needs of our students are being met.
Please remember the Student Union is here to support you throughout your university experience – get in touch, and our door is always open!
Blake Hutchings, Vice President, Education
My name is Blake, and I am your elected Vice President Education for Winchester Student Union. My role focuses on the equal representation of all students as well as giving you the opportunity to represent fellow students on your individual courses.
One of my main aims is also to work thoroughly on enhancing your student experience during your time at the University of Winchester.
The Student Union has given me so many opportunities to engage with extracurricular activities including being on a society committee, taking up volunteering opportunities, and being a student representative for my course allowing students to give feedback.
I hope you enjoy your time in Winchester and I encourage you to take up the opportunities the Student Union has to offer.
Henry Sims (Vice President, Activities)
My name is Henry and I am your elected Student Union Vice President Activities 2014/15. When I joined University, I signed up for multiple sports teams and societies and it was honestly the best decision I’ve ever made. It is now my job to help you get you involved as the Student Union offers a wide variety of sports and societies. You can participate competitively, keep fit or just meet with friends once a week at BOP or Flirt!
Getting involved with a sports team or society is hands down the best way to meet new people. Once you finish University, employers always look favourably upon extracurricular activities such as these so therefore your participation can be valuable as well as fun. There is something for everyone and it’s great to get involved and forget about the stress of a degree for a couple of hours a week.
Look out for me on campus, I’m approachable and energetic so will always be around. Winchester is a great place to study, but don’t forget to have some time away from your textbooks and engage with the Student Union extracurricular activities, the benefits are endless!
Democracy in Action
As well as providing shops, bars and entertainment, the Union is a democratically run organisation. The President and Vice President are full-time sabbatical officers who are elected from amongst the students to oversee the smooth running of the Union and its services and to ensure that it responds to student demand.
They are aided by an Executive Committee and Student Union Senate all of whom are elected from, and are accountable to the student body. Continuity and professional expertise are provided by permanent staff, and there are opportunities for students to work in the bars, shop and as security stewards.
The Union provides welfare, academic advice and representation to students, and the President, along with part-time officers responsible for specific areas, has responsibility for coordinating this work. The President is also a Governor of the University and through the Union, students are represented on University Committees. The Union is there to support student appeals to the University. The Union runs campaigns each year, promoting student health and welfare issues.
Winchester Student Union is affiliated to the National Union of Students (NUS) and through the National Union is committed to giving students everywhere representation at the highest level and co-ordinating national campaigns on student issues.
Students are given the opportunity to attend national demonstrations and conferences on student issues and the right to be elected into national positions.
Clubs and Societies
The Union provides leisure and recreation activities for students. Sport is organised by the Vice President (Activities) and the Student Union Sports coordinator. The range of sports clubs is wide and includes football, rugby, cricket, hockey, basketball, netball, as well as ultimate frisbee, volleyball, skiing and many more.
There is a variety of clubs and societies which meet regularly, such as performing arts, film, radio, LGBT, archaeology, history and role-playing. New clubs and societies are always emerging as students form groups to carry out the activities they want to undertake.
Bars and shops
The Student Union has a special feel to it, providing a relaxed and secure environment for entertainment. The Vault received the NUS award Best Bar None confirming the venue to be a highly popular facility. Events take place regularly and include club nights, quizzes, comedy evenings, live music, promotions, multi-venue events and theme nights. Over the course of the year the Union organises larger events such as the Winton Reunion Weekend, Freshers, Christmas, Summer and Graduation Balls which often play host to top name acts. These events are hugely popular and always sell out very quickly.
The Union also runs shops and launderettes situated on King Alfred Campus and at West Downs. These commercial services provide value for money for students and income to support Union core activity.
The Student Union, above all, is about getting more from Winchester than just a qualification. Involvement is essential, whether that is as an officer, member of a club or society, or just as a user of the bar and laundry. The Student Union helps you do more!
