Robert Cross - MA Film Studies
Faculty of Arts
Biography
Robert Cross graduated with a degree in Media Studies from the University of Surrey before enrolling full-time on MA Film Studies at Winchester.
“I’ve always loved movies and I studied film as part of my undergraduate degree and I regularly go to the cinema. I enjoy all film, mainstream and art house, but my favourite film is Once Upon A Time in the West.
“Study on the MA is very interesting and varied, and the lecturers are experts in their field who have written many books on film. The programme caters for all tastes and you can tie study into your personal interests.
“For one of my modules I was able to critically examine one of my favourite directors, Michael Mann, and discuss the depiction of women in his Al Pacino and Robert De Niro movie, Heat.
“I particularly enjoyed the Gothic Horror module, especially when we explored how ventriloquism has been used in movies such as in the British portmanteau film, Dead of Night. The Space and Place module was interesting; I enjoyed the focus on British movie film locations.”
Robert also works part-time helping autistic teenagers and this experience has influenced his dissertation, which explores how autism is depicted in Hollywood Films. “Rain Man, starring Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise, is the most famous one but there are others and I want to examine the reputation of autism and how it is in real life compared to its portrayal in film.”
“Film is a great personal interest of mine and once I graduate I would like to make a career out of it and become a film studies lecturer.”
