Part-Time fees are calculated on a pro rata basis of the full-time fee for a 120 credit course. The fee for a single credit is £77 and a 15 credit module is £1,156. Part-time students can take up to a maximum 90 credits per year, so the maximum fee in a given year will be the government permitted maximum fee of £6,939.

- Kit: In year 1, students are expected to wear the appropriate attire for practical sessions. Students can buy a department kit or wear their own. Students can buy as little or as much they like. Cost £20-£50 per item.
- Core texts: Core Texts are available from the University Library; however some students prefer to purchase their own copies. Some Core Texts can be bought second hand, or as an ebook which can often reduce this cost. Cost £70-£299 per academic year.
- Printing and binding: Students may be required to pay for the costs of dissertation printing and binding. Cost £10.

The King Alfred Campus boasts state-of-the-art facilities such as a Sport and Exercise Physiology Laboratory, a Sport and Exercise Biomechanics Laboratory, a custom-built Sports Analysis Suite, University Gym, fitness suite, sports hall, and multi-purpose courts. The Winchester Sports Stadium, located at Bar End, offers superb track and field facilities.

Pre-approved for a Masters:
University of Winchester students studying Bachelor Honours degrees are pre-approved to start a Masters degree at Winchester. To be eligible final year students must accept an offer of a place by the end of March and meet the entry requirements of their chosen Masters degree.

Sport and Exercise Science provides the opportunity for students to follow a highly specific and scientific sport and exercise programme which uniquely focuses on the disciplines of sport and exercise psychology, sport and exercise physiology, sport and exercise biomechanics and research methods.
Specifically, students are provided with the knowledge base to critically evaluate and engage with contemporary research related to sports performance and exercise participation. In addition, students develop the necessary skills to actively initiate and conduct scientific projects linked to individuals, teams and agencies from across the wider spectrum of sport and exercise.
Students may wish to pursue the three year BSc (Hons) Applied Sport and Exercise Science pathway or the four year MSci (Hons) Applied Sport and Exercise Science pathway.
This three year BSc is composed of four key strands which combine to form an innovative programme of study:
- Sport and Exercise Psychology strand
The aim of the psychological strand is to enable students to make an informed assessment of those psychological factors which are thought to influence an individual's involvement and performance in sport and exercise. Students examine ways in which psychological constructs influence sporting and exercise involvement and behaviour. Furthermore, students explore how elite athletes cope with the expectations, experiences and outcomes of high level competition, as well as examining what motivates the child and amateur performer to both become and remain involved in sport and exercise. Further components help adopt a more social psychological perspective.
- Sport and Exercise Physiology strand
This strand gives students an understanding of the physiology underpinning exercise and sports performance. In essence, it examines the underlying physiological adaptations which occur during sport and address issues pertinent to today's competitive athlete. Consequently, the strand specifically addresses whole-body system integration, looking at factors such as metabolism, trainability and adaptation, as well as hormonal and cardiorespiratory responses. It examines nutritional requirements from the recreational athlete to the elite competitor and provides an opportunity for students to study methods of physiological assessment along with their application to different sporting and exercise activities for the purposes of implementing appropriate training programmes and assessing various components of fitness.
- Sports and Exercise Biomechanics strand
This strand centres on the mechanical analysis of human movement with a focus on reducing injuries and improving performance within both competitive sporting and recreational exercise settings. The strand incorporates mechanical principles of motion, kinematic and kinetic concepts, anatomical knowledge and a range of quantitative measurement techniques which allow for a greater understanding of the muscular, joint and skeletal actions of the body during the execution of a given task, skill or technique. There are focused modules designed to provide a greater understanding of how these actions may be altered or affected by injury or disability and treated through rehabilitation or manipulated through the engineering and development of specific sporting equipment and assistive devices with specific material properties which are deemed to be desirable.
- Research strand
This strand seeks to develop a familiarity with both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and apply these to various sporting and exercise contexts. The acquisition of such skills not only underpins learning from coursework in other strands, but is also a prerequisite for completing the dissertation.
The dissertation is designed to provide an opportunity to study an area which students are most interested in. It represents the most independent piece of research that is carried out at undergraduate level. Students are supervised throughout this process but are expected to take increasing responsibility for the development of this piece of work.

Course delivery is reflected in a balance between lectures, seminars, workshops, practical and laboratory work and tutorials. The programmes also structure work in between sessions by setting tasks for students to prepare for following sessions. However, many sessions are made up of a mixture of teaching styles and learning activities. We also encourage students to work together and support each other in small groups, and access academic support from staff within the course team, personal tutors and the wide range of services within the University.

Students also have the opportunity to interact with visiting students to help them better understand sport in different countries and cultures, whilst the Winchester Research Apprenticeship Programme (WRAP) enables students to work with academics on a genuine research project, so that they engage first-hand in cutting-edge scholarly activity and build vital transferable skills for their future.

Staff from the department are continually striving to find new and innovative ways to teach and support students. All tutors are interested both in sport and how to teach it. We firmly believe active learning and practical activities as well as directed independent learning to help our students to excel. Many of the staff are actively engaged in their own research. This research continually feeds back into our curriculum to provide areas for debate that are right at the cutting edge of the study of sport and exercise.

The majority of the work in the sport and exercise programmes is based on coursework. This coursework includes assignments such as essays, laboratory reports, presentations, practical skills assessments, role plays projects, group debates, case studies and the dissertation. Although there are some examinations, many of these are based around seen papers. Such diversity ensures students become competent at expressing themselves academically through a number of different types of assessment.
All assessments will also meet the standards required by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES).

Graduates work in sport and exercise science support or performance sport support. Others enter careers in teaching, leisure, tourism, education, research and health.
Students develop a wide range of transferable employability skills including the ability to communicate effectively and work both independently and collaboratively. These skills are valued in a range of graduate careers, including those not directly related to sport and fitness. Many students also continue on to study for postgraduate qualifications to further enhance their employability. New innovative master's level programmes are constantly reviewed to ensure that they are at the forefront of contemporary study.

The Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) record collects information about what those completing university go on to do six months after graduation. The Careers Service undertakes DLHE on an annual basis through surveys and a data collection process. DLHE is designed and strictly controlled by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA).
While DLHE provides accurate information about first destinations, this data needs to be viewed with some degree of care. Six months after leaving university is often a time of much uncertainty and change for leavers; many will be unsure of their long-term career plans and may take a temporary job or time out. The destinations of graduates only six months out of university do not necessarily reflect longer term career success and are therefore a crude measure of employability. Therefore, DLHE data should be viewed as merely a 'snapshot' of one particular year's experiences at a specific point in time.
