Paintings and works on paper by Francis Martin
31st October to 16th December 2011
An exhibition of figurative painting and drawing by Francis Martin. Here recent work, themes and ideas were explored around portraiture. The exhibition provided a cross section of work, incorporating different styles and techniques employed by Francis during his investigation into the subject over the past couple of years.
The exhibition comprised of portraiture in various styles and techniques, including large-scale paintings that are deliberately loose; the intention with these works was to experiment with mark making and the use of colour. The display continues with a series of detailed portraits painted onto various unusual wooden supports including a reconstructed potato crate, panels sourced from an old packing crate, floor boards and rough sawn African hardwood, the idea behind these is that the supports would add particular characteristics to the portraits that will create or emphasise certain nuances in the work; vertically aligned floor boards for example would represent restriction for an image of a girl longing out of an upstairs window.
“I am a professional artist working mostly in oil paint; however drawing is also a big part of my practice. I have always had a strong interest in Painting and drawing and have been practicing since a very early age. I graduated from Winchester school of art in 2009, which as a course was geared towards the theory of art.
Since graduation I have exhibited widely in London, the South and in 2009 I had work exhibited in the affordable art fairs both in London and Amsterdam. For the last two years I have been awarded the Young artist of the year award by the SAA (Society for All Artists), I’ve had work exhibited in the Cork street open exhibition in Mayfair and have recently been selected for the Ruth Borchard self-portraiture award and exhibition in Kings cross. My work has also been published in various magazines including the national glossy Artist and Illustrators magazine”.
