John Opie - The University of WinchesterJohn Opie was a eighteenth century painter who specialised in portraits.  Travelling around England, he did many portrait commissions and became known at ‘The Cornish Wonder’ after his success in London.

This piece was originally painted in 1798 for the Robert Bowyer’s Historic Gallery in Pall Mall, London.  It is currently on display in the West Downs Centre of the University, and is on loan from the Winchester City Council Museums Services.
