World-leading research in Education at the University of Winchester more than doubles
Nearly 20% of all outputs submitted in Winchester's Education submission to REF 2014 were deemed to be of world-leading quality. The percentage of overall research activity judged to be world-leading has more than doubled since RAE 2008. 60% of all outputs submitted were judged to be either world-leading or internationally excellent, with 87% overall being of international quality or above. 40% of research submitted was recognised as having very considerable impact in terms of reach and significance, with the reach and significance of 100% of the submission having either considerable or very considerable impact. The environment in which the Education research was produced was recognised as conducive to producing research of internationally recognised quality in terms of its vitality and sustainability.
The research included in the submission ranged across disciplines to include teacher education and professional and vocational learning, early years, special and inclusive education, learning and teaching, medical education, philosophy of education and history of education.
The results of REF 2014 demonstrate the commitment of the University and the Faculty to supporting research from early career researchers to those with established publication profiles.
Case studies from two well-established University research centres demonstrate the breadth of impact beyond academia. Projects from the Centre for Real World Learning focus on vocational and practical learning and 'habits of mind' that foster successful lifelong learning. Research in the Centre for the History of Women's Education has led to collaborations with school Centres for the History of Girls' Secondary Education and their links with local communities and projects.
