Biography

Professional and Academic Career

During my time as a PhD student at the University of Lancaster, I was the tutor for a number of seminar classes. Along with a colleague, I also ran a short research methods course and taught older people about research methods for a study.

Within a year of starting at Winchester, I took on the role and responsibilities of programme leader of the BSc Social Care Studies. After an 18-month period as Acting Head of the Department of Health and Social Care before its restructuring; I then took on the sole responsibility for devising, developing and implementing a BA Sociology programme. In 2010, the programme was successfully validated and ran for the first time. The numbers on the programme have exceeded expectations for its first year.

In 2010, I finished a Masters of Business Administration (Distinction). The dissertation from the MBA led to a published peer-reviewed article.

Recent Research/Consultancy Activity

I have recently undertaken a survey of landlords on tenancy deposit protection, and now my focus is on students at university. This is an independent piece of research, which has been promoted by the National Union of Students and Endsleigh Insurance.

Recently, I was commissioned with a colleague to undertake a study into underage drinking in Eastleigh. This project was an evaluation of the impact of the effect of multiple interventions on alcohol attitudes and behaviour in Bishopstoke, Fair Oak and Horton Heath. It involved carrying out a postal survey to young people and parents, along with focus groups with key individuals within the local community.

In December 2010, I worked with the Council of Voluntary Service (One Community) in Eastleigh in a training/advisory capacity on a project concerning carers and young carers within Eastleigh.
