The Estates department manages all the land and buildings at the University of Winchester. It is responsible for all repairs and maintenance as well as capital investment in new buildings. It prepares an estates strategy which is revised every five to seven years, and which is published after full consultation with all other user groups within the institution.
Over the past 10 years, the University has adopted a policy of selecting the highest calibre architects and engineers and the number of design awards demonstrates our commitment to commissioning outstanding modern architecture.
This includes:
- 1997 National Housing Design Award for the West Downs Student Village
- 2000 Royal Institute of British Architects Award for the Martial Rose Library
- 2001 Civic Trust Commendation for Martial Rose Library
- 2003 Civic Trust Commendation for The West Downs Centre
- 2004 City of Winchester Trust Design Award for West Downs Centre
- 2007 City of Winchester Trust Design Award for The Stripe (John Stripe Theatre)
- 2008 Royal Institute of British Architect Regional Award for the University Centre
- 2009 shortlisted fora Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Award for Outstanding Estates Initiatives
The Estates Management Team are supported by two managers and twelve specialist trade operatives in the Maintenance Department.
The University grounds are maintained by six gardeners under the control of our head gardener.
