Children in Care
The University of Winchester has an excellent reputation for our work with young people in the care of Hampshire Children's Services, and for support we give to undergraduates who have come from a background in care.
Creative Spring School 2011
On Friday 8th to Sunday 10th April, fourteen young people, aged 14-17, in the care of Hampshire County Council’s Children’s Services attended the three-day residential at the University of Winchester. The aim of the residential is for young people from a care background to experience university life and promote the HE opportunities available to them. This is the sixth summer school which has been organised by The University of Winchester in partnership with Hampshire County Council.
This year the residential was based around creative arts. On the first day, students participated in a variety of creative activities including script writing, clowning and contemporary dance all of which were led by the University of Winchester undergraduate students. On the second day, the participants had the opportunity to work at the Winchester School of Art where students were able to try out a variety of print making techniques.
In the evenings, the students worked in teams at Winnal Rock School, learning new instruments and writing lyrics to create songs. Students then performed their songs to one another and were able to show their songs to their parents and carers at presentations on the final day.
Participants also experienced living in Halls of Residence and took part in activities which allowed them to become familiar with a Higher Education environment.
The date for the next residential is 26th-28th April 2012. Please click here for further information. For further details and to apply please contact Rachel Smith or email at Rachel.Smith@Winchester.ac.uk
Internships Plus
Internships Plus is a new programme run by Hampshire County Council to support Hampshire Care Leavers by providing paid intern opportunities within Hampshire County Council. In July 2011, the University of Winchester delivered a 4 day training course for 20 participants to ensure they were ready for the responsibilities of paid employment and were familiar with Hampshire County Council. A second cohort was recruited in January 2012, with another 'work-ready' programme delivered at the University. The second intake will begin their placements in February/March.
Further information on Internship Plus is available on the Hampshire County Council website and can be accessed by clicking here.
