The University will ensure that entry into employment and progression within employment are determined solely by criteria which are related to the duties of a particular post and the relevant salary scale and will support career development and progression to ensure diverse representation and participation at all levels.
Compulsory E&D training for all staff
All new members of staff must complete the Diversity in the Workplace E-learning course as part of their Induction to the University.
This interactive course is widely used in universities in the UK. It is designed to increase understanding of the importance of equality and diversity, as well as the legal framework within which we work in higher education. It covers all areas as addressed in the Equality Act including sexual orientation and homophobia, disability, race, age and gender.
Training for recruitment/interview panels
All Chairs of any planned interview panel must have completed the Recruitment and Selection of Staff training run by Human Resources. The training helps staff to gain an understanding of the legal framework surrounding employment (improve awareness of University procedures on selection and appointment of staff) and practice and improve interview skills/techniques. The training also covers unconscious bias, where as humans we make automatic judgments and assessments of people and situations without us realising. Our biases are influenced by our background, cultural environment and personal experiences. We may not even be aware of these views and opinions, or be aware of their full impact and implications (ECU).
Whilst the training is compulsory for panel chairs, other staff who sit on interview panels are also welcome to sign up for this training.

New for 2014 - University of Winchester equality training clips
The Equality and Diversity Coordinator has utilised the skills and expertise of students and staff to create a series of short equality training clips that provide case studies of different forms of discrimination that could occur within an HE setting. These are available to all staff on the Staff Intranet Equality Information Bank page.
Stonewall training and CPD opportunities
The LGBTI Staff Support Network and Equality and Diversity Officer promote and encourage staff to attend advertised Stonewall seminar events, alongside other training and leadership programmes (with the approval and support of their line manager).
The University also runs Stonewall 'Tackling Homophobia in the work place and class room training', delivered by the Stonewall Education Team. This is advertised in the staff development handbook and intranet site. Staff development can also arrange bespoke training with Stonewall for individual departments/teams.
