Why is rL important?

Why is rL important?

  • rL matters to individuals, their families and friends and to society at large. It has social, moral, political and financial value.
  • rL is at the core of our continued evolution as a species. It is what enables people to respond effectively and creatively to the changes and demands that come their way.
  • rL is directly connected to people’s well-being. We know that people undertaking worthwhile, non-trivial projects and challenges – rL in other words – get more fulfilment from this than almost anything else.
  • rL is at the heart of economic success. We know that being able to have good ideas when you need them, getting the best out of the people around you and being persistently resourceful – rL in other words – are key aspects of individual and collective prosperity.

We need the kinds of practical learning which make up rL as much as we need academic learning if we are to be successful in life.

We need to stop wasting time and talent in schools, colleges, universities, homes and workplaces because the learning methods we use are inefficient or inappropriate. We are interested in intellectual understanding that helps competence to grow – but not the display of ‘knowledgeability’ for its own sake.
