Centre for Real-World Learning

As our name suggests, we are keen to find out more about how people learn to accomplish real things in their everyday lives.

Like learning to:

  • Play the piano
  • Chair a meeting
  • Join a social networking site
  • Calm a baby
  • Kick a ball
  • Write a story
  • Drive a car
  • Resolve heated arguments

Specifically, given the enormous personal, social and economic importance of learning to us all, our mission is to find out more about how people can be helped to get better at learning whatever it is they want to learn.

Why ‘real world’? Because our focus is on the development of competence – learning to do things, not just learning about things. Our prime interest is not in how to help people pass exams.
