A Moment of Truth: The Kairos Palestine Document
On the 2nd November 2010 the Winchester Centre of Religions for Reconciliation and Peace hosted a workshop to discuss the contents of the Kairos Palestine document.
Kairos Palestine was composed by an ecumenical group of Palestinian Christians. Launched on 11st December 2009 in Bethlehem it was conceived as a “Christian Palestinians’ word to the world about what is happening in Palestine”.
Led by Miranda Pinch and the Reverend Pat Clegg, the presentation was designed to explore the challenge presented in the document, and to engage with the complex issues involved in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The event brought together delegates from Christian, Palestinian, Jewish, and Muslims backgrounds, as well as academics and members of the public with a personal and professional interest in this area. Perhaps inevitably the document addressed extremely sensitive issues and the ensuing debate was passionate and sometimes heated. Delegates spoke eloquently of their own experiences of growing up and living on both sides of the Israel/Palestine divide, and it was extremely rewarding to see at the end of the event attendees exchanging contact details in the hope of maintaining the links and relationships initiated by the event.
Winchester Centre of Religions for Reconciliation and Peace have hosted a number of events exploring the complex issues involved in the ongoing conflict in Israel/Palestine, and is working with Local Jewish, Muslim, and Christian individuals and communities to establish a regular network and series of events addressing this issue.
