Exploring the Role of Faith in Public Life

In May this year Dr Anna king and Dr Mark Owen were invited to participate in an event exploring the role of faith in shaping public and international policy. The event brought together academics, religious leaders from a wider range of faiths, and policy makers to explore challenging and pertinent questions such as:

  • What are the boundaries between faith and public life?
  • Is it legitimate for believers to engage in efforts to change laws to reflect their own fundamental beliefs and morals.
  • Is it ever legitimate for believers to try to shape the morals of a state, and if so what means should or should not be used to achieve this?
  •  Is witness a more powerful tool than the use of law in promoting fundamental values and morals?

The event was hosted by centre partners St. Ethelburga’s Centre for Reconciliation and Peace, and organised by Religions for Peace UK. Guest speakers included Oliver McTernan, Director of leading think tank Forward Thinking and the Revd Dr Gary Wilton Church of England Representative to the EU.
