Mark gained a First Class BA in Theology and Religious Studies; he holds an MA in Death in World Religions and a PhD in Tibetan Buddhism, all from the University of Winchester. He has carried out extensive fieldwork throughout South Asia as well as research visits to Tibet, China, Mongolia and the Republic of Buryatiya in Southern Siberia.
Mark is Programme Leader for the MA in Reconciliation and MA Reconciliation & Peacebuilding, offered by the Department of Theology, Religion and Philosophy. The Departments's research impact assessed in REF 2014 included the high-impact case study project Religion and Peacebuilding in Nepal, led by Dr Owen and Prof. Anna King.
Mark also runs the charity Freedom to Learn, which works to provide the opportunity of education to children from some of the remotest regions of the Himalayas and South Asia.
