Fairtrade

Our Fairtrade status is one of the ways in which the University demonstrates its commitment to development in the Third World and to sustainability.

The University of Winchester was first recognised by the Fairtrade Foundation as a Fairtrade University in 2007.

What is Fairtrade?

Fairtrade text logoFairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in developing countries. The Fairtrade mark guarantees a price that covers the cost of production, a social premium for producer groups to invest in business or community development, long-term trading relationships and advanced payments.

How do we support Fairtrade?

  • Both the University and the Student Union have a Fairtrade policy
  • Foods displaying the Fairtrade mark are sold in all the shop and in food outlets on campus
  • Fairtrade products are served at meetings hosted by the University and the Student Union
  • The University is committed to campaigning for increased consumption of Fairtrade products
  • Our Fairtrade Steering Group meets regularly to discuss how we can promote Fairtrade and special Fairtrade events are held on campus
  • The Chair of the University's Fairtrade group is on the Executive Committee for the Winchester City Fairtrade Network. Ensuring positive collaboration between the city and the University on Fairtrade initiatives
  • Fairtrade is embedded into the curriculum for a number of academic programmes
