Childhood Studies
The FdA Childhood Studies programme is a distinctive Foundation degree that appeals to a wide range of students who are currently working in some capacity with babies and children aged up to 11 years of age in the statutory, voluntary or private sectors.
The degree was developed through working closely in partnership with Hampshire County Council's Early Education Childcare Unit (EECU), local head teachers and local providers of early years care, education and playwork provision. Our aim is to provide a flexible programme of study that enables students to 'earn while they learn' and is designed for part-time study in Winchester.
The degree is recognised by the Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC) as a 'Sector-Endorsed Foundation Degree in Early Years'.The University was one of the first higher education institutions to gain such endorsement from the CWDC, whose aim is to increase and improve the career prospects of practitioners working with young children. This also allows qualifying students to progress to a 'Senior Practitioner' role.
The programme also helps students meet the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) requirements for practitioners working with Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTAs) as well as the Children's Workforce Development Council's requirements for the Early Years Professional Status (EYPS).
The degree offers wide access for students who would not normally be able to access university provision. We are committed to encouraging students onto the programme with a variety of previous experience. We also recognise that our prospective students will have wide-ranging needs and abilities, and so we aim to make you, the individual student, a learner and the starting point for the programme.
