Childhood, Youth and Community Studies

The Childhood, Youth and Community Studies degree (CYCS) aims to provide a broad introduction to policy and practice in a range of educational, community, and welfare contexts.

The Programme is aimed at those considering a career in professions such as teaching, social work, youth work, early years, community development,the probation service and the police service.

Modules focus on relevant issues and themes linked to lecturers’ experience and research interests. These currently include health and wellbeing, early years education, youth education and perceptions of crime, deviance and youth culture.

The Programme also offers opportunities to gain voluntary experience in appropriate settings, with credits awarded for successful engagement with community projects and initiatives. A variety of assessment methods are used, including individual essays, group presentations and a Dissertation (an extended piece of independent study) in the final year of the Programme.
