Performance Support Levels
What technical support will I have for my performance based assesment?
This very much depends on the level of support your course leader has decided is appropriate for your module, some assessments may not be supported by technicians at all, whilst others, particularly in level 3, may provide more opportunity for technical innovation.
First of all you must find out the level of technical support allocated to your assessment; Your module leader will be able to give you this information.
Unsupported Performances
If your performance is unsupported, the technicians will not be available to operate any equipment or effects. This includes theatrical lighting, sound and projection. If you have a very specific, simple requirement, it may be achievable, however you should seek advice from your module leader and the Theatre Technicians - but do not expect anything in this situation. If the module is not technically supported, the module leader will certainly not be marking you on your use of technical elements - and your energies may well be best spent in other areas!
Supported Performances
If your performance is supported, the Theatre Technicians will be able to help you achieve your technical requirements, however, there are still limits to what can be achieved.
Time
Time is one of the biggest restraints on how complex your technical requirements can be. Your module leader will be able to tell you how much time you have for your performance and how much 'tech time' you have before your slot. This amount of time is all you will have to set up and rehearse all of your technical requirements before you perform. This does not mean that interesting and dynamic effects can not be created - something that may seem spectacularly complicated, can actually be very simple to create, and likewise fairly straightforward things can take a long time to set up and get working. The best thing to do if you have a specific idea in mind is to come and disscuss it with the Theatre Technicans.
