Biography

Jason joined the Department in September 1996. He has a BSc (Hons) in Geography and Sports Studies (Roehampton Institute) and an MA in the Sociology of Sport (Leicester University) that was passed with distinction. Jason completed his PhD in the Sociology of Sport at Loughborough University (with a thesis on rugby union and national identity in the British Isles) in 1999.

Findings from his doctoral research have been presented at a variety of international conferences, such as: the annual symposium of the International Sociology of Sport Association (Rome, 1995); ‘Sport in the City’ (Memphis, 1996); the World Congress of Sociology (Montreal, 1998), ‘The Nation and Sport’ (London, 2001) and at the Second World Congress of the Sociology of Sport (Cologne, 2003). In addition, Jason’s research has been published in several academic journals and books. Some examples include: ‘The Men in White: Reflections on Rugby Union, the Media and Englishness’ (in the International Review for the Sociology of Sport); and ‘Making Sense of Emerald Commotion: Rugby Union, National Identity and Ireland’ (in Identities: Global Studies in Power and Culture). His latest work will form a chapter in an edited collection entitled ‘Sport and Migration’ to be published by Routledge in 2010.

Jason has worked as a Guest Reviewer for the International Review for the Sociology of Sport and Sport in Society journals and the publishers Butterworth-Heinemann/Elsevier and Pearson Education. His current research interests include sport, national identity and globalisation; sport and the media; and the commercialisation of sport.

Jason has taught the sociology of sport at undergraduate level for over fifteen years. Over this period he has developed a range of expertise related to learning, teaching and assessment strategies. To reflect this, in 2009, Jason achieved the status of Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
