Biography

John has been a lecturer in the Sports Studies Department at the University of Winchester since January 2008. He completed a BSc in Sport & Exercise Science (First Class) and MSc in Sport & Exercise Psychology (Distinction) at the University of Chichester. John is in the process of further study towards the PGCLTHE at the University of Winchester and is an active sport and exercise psychology consultant. He has experience in working with academy football and development squads and works closely with both the NHS and Primary Care Trust in Portsmouth.

His present research interests generally operate within the quantitative paradigm and have examined:

  • Psychomotor learning and performance
  • Decision-making in soccer
  • Person perception in sport
  • Computer simulated (Nintendo Wii) physical activity
  • Expectancy effects in marking

Funding Awards and Professional Membership

Funding Awards and Professional Membership:

John has been a professional member of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) since 2007.

He has also received both internal and external funding for a number of research and consultancy based projects, including:

2009 – 2010. Externally funded (£20,000) contract with Portsmouth City Primary Care Trust and the Pompey Study Centre to evaluate the potential for a ‘Healthy Bus’ to facilitate public knowledge about healthy eating and healthy living behaviours.

2009 – 2010. Internally funded (£5000) research and knowledge exchange project entitled: “Physical activity and the Nintendo Wii: A psycho-physiological approach”.

2008 – 2010. Internally funded (£1300) learning and teaching project entitled: “The influence of reputation information on the assessment of undergraduate student work”.

2008 – 2010. Internally funded (£5000) research informed teaching project entitled: “An exploration of the informational cues students utilise to form an initial impression of a lecturer”.

2008 – 2009. Externally funded (£3000) contract with Winchester City FC to provide psychological support to the Under-18 Academy Squad through the Sports Science Consultancy Unit (SSCU).
