Biography

Dr Denise Hewlett, BA Hons, MSc Dist, MA, PhD joined Winchester University in January 2011 as a Lecturer on Management Programmes. Prior to this appointment and whilst completing her PhD, Denise worked in the public sector and with the EU on projects concerned with managing protected areas for recreational, tourism and conservation objectives; and for Bournemouth University, in the School of Service Industries, as both a Lecturer and Researcher in the International Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Research.  Previous to these careers, Denise worked for more than fifteen years in the private sector as a strategic and project manager for a number of national and international organisations in service industries.

Expertise

Denise’s PhD thesis extended her research and working experiences gained in Spain and Portugal, as to partnership working and public engagement in decision-making contexts for the management of National Parks.  Her interests in this area continue, revolving around the political, economic, social and cultural aspects of public engagement in governance contexts; especially so in the strategic management of National Parks, both in the UK and overseas, that is based on sustainable principles. More specifically, in these environments her research uses Mixed Methods and Participatory Action Research to examine governance processes and the effects of social, economic and natural capitals on community engagement and disengagement. More generally, additional research and publications focus on communities’ ethical and moral rights to engage, the philosophical and practical advantages of their engagement in project formulation, management and implementation, conflict resolution, and the strategic imperatives of partnerships and institutional engagement with both businesses and residents in decisions taken. Such decisions concern projects for rural development, tourism destination management, the management of recreation and in the formation and implementation of strategies for the area-wide design of projects related to SMEs’ Corporate Responsibilities in protected areas.  .
