Derek's area of expertise is the cultural and psychoanalytic study of early childhood, visual studies and narrative studies.

Research Interests
Derek is currently researching the significance of Niklas Luhmann's systems analysis for educational study, and the psychodynamics of the classroom in the light of Françoise Dolto's work.
Derek is a supervisor for MPhil/PhD. His areas of expertise are:
- Cultural construction of childhood
- Reconceptualisation of early childhood
- Visual and figurative thinking within education
