BA (Hons) Modern Liberal Arts

Liberal Arts is not an academic subject in the usual sense of the word, and it crosses many subject boundaries.

You might know the areas it covers now as philosophy, the humanities, natural science and the fine arts. Each of these areas will be represented in our programme. As such, it offers a much wider range of studies than is possible within a single academic subject or specialism. But in essence, for two thousand years in the West, Liberal Arts has been a curriculum for a genuinely higher education. 'Higher' here refers to an exploration of first principles regarding the truth of ourselves and the world around us.

a person looking up at the starsWehave called our programme Modern Liberal Arts because we believe that the modern Western world is still searching for first principles, but in ways very different from ancient and mediaeval thinkers. We also understand that Modern Liberal Arts cannot just think about a higher education; it has to provide one. This means that we understand that its subject content, whilst stimulating and challenging, is secondary to the overall education effect that the content produces for the student. It means, too, that the student is the most important part of its curriculum.

Overall, if we have to say who, in particular, we thought would be attracted to our vision and philosophy of Modern Liberal Arts, we would not list qualifications or background, but rather a person who remains troubled by, yet committed to, the difficulty of the important questions in life. Following these questions often means wandering into unfamiliar waters.
