The Scrutiny and Use of Inquisitions in Exchequer and Chancery
What were the different government departments concerned with in using the IPMs?
As we have seen, the IPM was returned to Chancery; a copy was also made for the Exchequer. The different government departments seem to have been interested in different aspects of the documents. Crudely put, Chancery was concerned with evidence relating to the inheritance of estates. The Exchequer was concerned with financial aspects – the income due to the Crown from estates taken into the escheator’s hand.
