Preliminary Results of the Pilot Project

The Overland Trade Project is entering all the data from the brokage books into an inter-relational database that interacts with a GIS mapping program. A few examples of preliminary results follow and demonstrate that results can be displayed in chart, graph and map form.

Below is an example of a map that has been derived from the database using the GIS mapping program. The map shows the changes in the distribution of wine over a period of time (weeks 1-12 1447-48, 1491-92, 1492-93 and 1493-94), while the bar chart shows the quantity of wine leaving Southampton each week in 1447-48.

Likewise, the map below was created by the interaction of the GIS mapping program with the database. It shows the destination of carts leaving Southampton, and the distance in miles of each destination from Southampton. The pie chart splits total carts by destination.
