BA Street Arts
Solo Performance Artist/Drama Teacher
Since graduating, I have begun to develop as a solo artist under the name of Well Red Comedy. Through this I have become an Associate Artist at The Point Theatre, Hampshire. As well as performing my acts at festivals, I also work as a freelance drama coach for various performing arts schools in the South.
What makes what I do interesting is that every day is different; one day I could be performing at a festival and the next I could be in a rehearsal room devising the show. Sometimes it's just a case of planning drama lessons and doing admin but all of it is such great fun, it doesn't feel like a job! I love the variety within my work and that keeps me motivated.
My degree enabled me to develop artistically as a solo artist whilst giving me a good understanding of what starting a company would entail. The lecturers are fantastic at drawing the best from you and because they have worked as street performers for many years, their combined knowledge provides the best start you could have. The course teaches you to be proactive and find opportunities rather than waiting for them to fall in your lap.
In my first term I challenged myself to do stand-up with some English students who had begun a comedy night in town. It was great to throw myself into something new and to begin exploring what area of comedy I wanted to develop a career in. Other departments are nearly always looking for performers too and this is a great way of networking with others.
