BA (Hons) Business Management (top-up) (2004-2006)
Project Manager, R Twining & Co Ltd
BA Business Management at Winchester allowed me to study part-time at the same time as carrying out my job at R Twining & Co in Andover. When I graduated I was working as Executive Assistant to the International Supply Director. Not long afterwards, I moved into a more analytical role in the manufacturing division where an opportunity arose to get involved in a strategic project and I got a taste for project management.
I was able to draw upon and put into context valuable knowledge acquired from the Strategic Management and Financial Management modules in my degree at Winchester. I think the skills that I learnt in these areas probably influenced my development the most.
My Programme Manager encouraged me to study for a PRojects IN Controlled Environments 2 (PRINCE2) practitioner qualification, an internationally recognised standard endorsed by the UK government as the project management standard for public projects. I am now a fully-fledged Project Manager in my own right and working on a global strategic project but there is no time for complacency. The challenge is to stay one step ahead and keep learning!
My job involves me managing multiple tasks within an overall timeline and finite budget. I thoroughly enjoy the interaction this brings with people right across the organisation. I find that good interpersonal skills as well as an organised and methodical approach are essential. Sometimes it can be difficult to achieve a balance between keeping an eye on the detail and seeing the broader picture.
I think that the best job-seeking advice that I can pass on to BA Business Management students is don’t use a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Tailor your CV for the role that you’re applying for. Also make sure your Microsoft skills are up to speed and consider taking the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL).
