About the day
The sun shone brightly on more than 500 former students of King Alfred's College and their families as they took part in two Cathedral ceremonies on the morning and afternoon of 14 April. The graduates had studied for the Certificate in Education between 1935 to 1979. Some travelled to Winchester for the day from as far as Spain, the USA and Canada.
The ceremonies were presided over by Dame Mary Fagan - her last graduation as Chancellor of the University. The morning ceremony, for alumni awarded CertEd in 1966 or earlier, saw Howard Horstead (1953 to 1955), Honorary Secretary of The Winton Club - the University's Alumni Association, speaking after the ceremony. The afternoon ceremony, for alumni awarded CertEd in 1967 or later, had 98-year-old alumnus John Shannon (1935 to 1937) delivering the address.
