We are well connected with bus services in and around Winchester.

Bluestar 1 service links Southampton with Winchester via Chandler’s Ford and runs several times an hour. Every bus has free Wifi and USB charging points. The nearest Bluestar 1 bus stop is on Southgate Street, less than a ten-minute walk from the University.

Stagecoach buses operate across the city. The nearest bus stops to the University are on Cromwell Road (service no. 1), Sparkford Road (service no. 69) and Romsey Road (services 4, 5, 46, E1/E2, 66).
National Express operate routes from London and all major airports (including Heathrow Airport and Gatwick Airport) as we all as linking to cities across the UK.

Train travel

Winchester is on the main line from London Waterloo with trains running several times an hour (taking approximately 1 hour from London). We are less than one mile (approximately 15-minute walk) from Winchester train station.

On foot from the station – Leave the station by the main exit (platform 2) and turn right onto Station Road leading onto Upper High Street. Turn right over the bridge and then left onto Clifton Terrace. Continue past the green until you reach the main road (Romsey Road).

For West Downs Quarter

Turn right and walk up the hill past the Royal Hampshire County Hospital and the Hillier Garden Centre. The West Downs Centre is on your right.

For King Alfred Quarter 

Cross the Romsey Road on foot and proceed along St James’ Terrace. Cross the road and turn right and take the path through the cemetery.

The King Alfred Campus is on the other side of the cemetery.

Air travel

From Southampton International Airport 

The train station is located a few minutes walk from the airport and is called Southampton Airport Parkway. There are regular trains to Winchester train station, a 15-minute walk from the university. The journey from Southampton Airport Parkway to Winchester train station is approximately 10 minutes.

Taxis are available from outside the terminal but need to be booked at the taxi desk inside the airport. 

From Heathrow Airport  

By train: Train services operate from London Waterloo direct to Winchester train station. Heathrow airport to London Waterloo is via central London and the London Underground. The average journey time is 40minutes to 1 hour. The average journey time from London Waterloo to Winchester is 1 hour. 

By coach: The National Express coach service operates from the bus station at Heathrow airport to Winchester coach station. On direct services the average journey time is 1 hours and 30 minutes. 

From Gatwick Airport 

By train: Train services operate between Gatwick airport and Clapham Junction. The average journey time from Clapham Junction to Winchester train station is 1 hour.

By coach: National Express coach services operate from Gatwick airport to Winchester coach station via Heathrow Airport. The average journey time is 4 hours.

Winchester has four Park & Ride car parks and the University is well served by the Park & Ride buses. The nearest bus stop is outside the Royal Hampshire County hospital on Romsey Road, a short walk from both campuses. All buses on the service stop here.

Once you have alighted at Royal Hampshire County Hospital:

For King Alfred Quarter walk downhill on Romsey Road and turn right on to St James' Lane. Follow the road around the sharp bend and turn right on to Sparkford Road. Walk downhill towards Burma Road and the University will be on your right.

For West Downs Quarter walk uphill on Romsey Road and the University will be on your right.
