Karl's life as an International Student:
My arrival to the UK was good; from the minute I stepped out into the greeting hall at the airport and met the International buddies that were waiting there till this day, all the staff, students and everyone I have met at the University of Winchester have just been so welcoming and helpful in every matter.
During the first week at the University the International student buddies were doing their best to inform all new students about the possibilities and responsibilities we have as students, together with giving us the option to have and learn useful and helpful things about the UK.
Making friends here has been so easy, during the first week almost everyday there was something happening so we all got to know each other as a group and as individuals. I think I have more International friends from the first week here than the entire time before I came here! Meeting British students is a process of feeling secure about your language skills and daring to say hey, and the British students and people in Winchester are really welcoming and look at you as one of them, a part of a big family of students – the only difference is that you are a little bit further away from home!
Student accommodation here in Winchester is great giving students modern housing with lots of new blocks being added by the University all of the time. When you arrive it only takes 30 minutes of arranging the room to your tastes and you feel right at home. My advice is to take something with you that is familiar to remind you of home and make friends with your housemates.
The social life of me as a student here, and as every other student, is what you make of it. You have the possibility to go to a party every day of the week, to join societies and clubs all of which allow you to make more friends and have more fun.
I study History here and I like my tutors, their style is a bit different than to back home but that is good as it tests me as a student and you quickly get used to it. I also get to take different classes with different tutors and that makes classes more fun and challenging, and it is by challenge that we learn!
My Winchester experience so far has been positive and I have learned so much about myself, crossed some borders, and I'm starting to understand a little bit about the big world and everything in it. The purpose of learning was the reason I came here and I have enjoyed every minute of my stay in Winchester and I still can't believe it's all still happening! I always look forward to what the next day in Winchester might bring……
