Library catalogue
You can use the main catalogue to search through all of our hard copy resources, including books, print journals, CDs, DVDs and CD-ROMs. The catalogue also contains our e-books and some online journal titles. If you are searching specifically for an online journal please go to the online resources page for help and advice.
Using the library catalogue to search for books
You can search by author, title or keyword from the main library catalogue page, entering them individually or in combination.
If your author searches are unsuccessful you may wish to try entering only the author’s surname.
If your title searches are unsuccessful, try entering the main portion of the title only, omitting any subtitles. You may also wish to try removing any punctuation from your entry and search just for the words in the title.
The catalogue will search for an exact match, so be careful of any pluralised words, Americanised spelling, hyphenated words and punctuation.
The catalogue also has an advanced search option. Here you may also search for particular editions of a title by selecting the search field ‘number’ and entering the book’s ISBN.
You may also browse books by their classification number by entering the shelfmark number into the field ‘classification’.

Searching the library catalogue for journals
The library catalogue will allow you to search for journals by entering the journal title into the ‘title’ field.
The catalogue will search for an exact match, so be careful of any pluralised words, Americanised spelling, hyphenated words and punctuation.
You can also search by the title’s ISSN by using the advanced search function and selecting the ‘number’ search field. Be sure to enter the dash in this 8-digit number.
The catalogue record will detail our holdings of the journal (i.e. which year(s) we hold issues for).
The catalogue will not search for specific articles. Please refer to the original citation for details of the article’s source. If you need further help locating a specific article, please contact libenquiries@winchester.ac.uk
