Rules and regulations

As with all University facilities, there are rules and regulations relating to conduct within the library and use of library materials. These rules must be adhered to at all times.

Noise in the library

The library is primarily an area for quiet and individual study. Whilst we tolerate moderate levels of noise in the north side of the building, the south side, overlooking the Dytche, is reserved for silent study. Failure to keep noise levels down will result in you being asked to leave the library.

Quiet group work is permitted in the School Resource Centre and in the study rooms. However, please be aware that these areas are not soundproof and that noise can be distracting for your peers.

Other study areas suitable for group work are provided elsewhere on the campus (Kenneth Kettle Building and Learning Cafe).

Mobile phones in the library

The use of mobile phones for calling purposes in the library is strictly prohibited. Phones must be turned onto silent mode at all times when in the building and users must leave the building completely before receiving or making any calls (i.e. calls cannot be taken in the entrance lobby). Text messaging is permitted in the building, but only if the phone is in silent mode.

Food and drink in the library

We regret that food and drink (except bottled water) are not permitted in the library. This is to avoid damage to books and electrical equipment as well as to avoid encouraging any pests into the building.

Library fines

The library has a fining system for overdue books. All books issued to you will be stamped with a due date. If your book runs overdue you will incur charges as follows:

4-week loan:
10p a day (max. £5)

7-day loan:
20p a day (max. £10)

24-hour loan:
50p an hour as of opening time the morning after the due day (max £20)

4-hour loan:
50p an hour (max. £20)

Study room keys/remote controls:
50p an hour (max. £20)

Rental DVDs:
Continue to be charged at £1 a night

Fines do not need to be paid immediately, but your account will be blocked until they are paid off in full. This will prevent you from borrowing items from us, using study rooms and borrowing from other departments across the University (media centre and ITS). Unpaid fines will also prevent you from receiving your results in your final year of study, receiving your degree and graduating.

We encourage all students to renew their books or return them to us in order to avoid incurring these charges. If you experience any difficulty renewing your items, contact the library either by phone or email. If there are extenuating circumstances that may prevent you from returning or renewing your items on time please contact the library immediately. These fines are in place to prevent valuable study materials from being kept from other users.
