Alan Titchmarsh MBE VMH DL began his career as an apprentice at the age of 15 before moving into print and broadcast journalism. He is a much-loved television presenter and writer, regularly contributing to newspapers and magazines. He has also written nine novels and more than 50 gardening books.
“I am absolutely delighted to be the new Chancellor of the University of Winchester,” said Alan. “I’ve long admired both the University's academic standing and its inclusive ethos and I am hugely looking forward to working closely with the Vice-Chancellor, to make sure that the University continues to maintain its reputation and goes from strength-to-strength. It will be a challenging role but one that I shall relish.”
Alan became a Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Hampshire in 2001 and is patron to more than 50 charities. He is the first Ambassador and a Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Vice President, and he presented the BBC’s annual coverage of the Chelsea Flower Show for 30 years.
In 2000, Alan was appointed as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to horticulture and broadcasting, and in 2004 he was awarded the RHS’s highest accolade, the Victoria Medal of Honour.
“We are all excited to be welcoming Alan Titchmarsh as our new Chancellor,” said Professor Joy Carter, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Winchester. “He brings with him a wealth of experience and I am sure he will have a positive and significant impact on all aspects of University life. I am very much looking forward to working with him over the coming years.”
Dame Mary Fagan DVCO JP has retired as Chancellor of the University of Winchester after nearly 10 very successful years in the role. “We owe Dame Mary a huge debt for her magnificent service and loyalty to the University,” said Professor Carter. “Her last official engagement as Chancellor was in April when she presided over an honorary graduation ceremony for former students as part of our 175th anniversary. I’m delighted that Dame Mary will be continuing her association with the University as Chancellor Emeritus.”
Alan Titchmarsh will be officially installed as Chancellor of the University of Winchester at an event to be held in October.
