26 August 2010

More than 300 academics and researchers from across the world will travel to the University of Winchester next month (7-9 September) to attend the British Psychological Society (BPS) Social Psychology Conference 2010.

This year’s conference, titled Social Psychology in Action: Theoretical Debate and Social Impact, aims to showcase the best of social psychological research both in the UK and abroad. Delegates are attending from a number of European countries including Finland, Germany and Spain as well as places as further afield as Australia, Japan and the USA.

“We’re delighted the University has attracted such a prestigious and important conference,” said Professor Nick Braisby, Head of the Department of Psychology at the University of Winchester. “The hosting of this important annual BPS conference is recognition of the strength of Winchester’s research in social psychology.”

Keynote speakers include Professor James Sidanius (Harvard University), Professor Susan Fiske (Princeton University), Professor Michael Billig (Loughborough University) and Professor Glynis Breakwell (University of Bath).

There will also be a postgraduate workshop at the University of Winchester on 6 and 7 September providing practical advice to psychology students in particular those intending or planning to undertake PhD study.

“Both these events provide the University with the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to the international social psychology research community,” added Dr Russell Luyt from the Department of Psychology at the University of Winchester. “They are both firm fixtures on the social psychology calendar that draw sustained interest from across the world. Academic staff from the University of Winchester will be presenting papers at the conference as well as chairing sessions and our postgraduate students are actively involved in organising the workshop.”
