The Cathedrals Group Choirs Festival is an annual event, which brings together choirs from each of the Cathedrals Group Universities to perform together in a concert open to the whole community.
The Cathedrals Group is an alliance of 16 universities and colleges which celebrate their Christian foundation. A different university each year hosts the event, and Winchester is proud to be hosting the 2016 Festival on Saturday 27th February as part of our 175th anniversary celebrations. The event is to be presented in the majestic Winchester Cathedral, starting at 7pm.
The concert, titled Gloria, will be performed by over 300 choir members and the Southern Sinfonia Orchestra.
Following a commissioning by the University, acclaimed British composer Will Todd and Winchester graduate lyricist Madeleine Vaughan have written a piece for organ and massed choirs entitled 'Bring Light'. The piece is written around the values of the University as a celebration of all that we stand for. It will be performed for the first time at the Festival. There will also be an en masse choir performance of both the first movement of Gloria and Magnificat by British composer John Rutter.
"Foundation Music is delighted to be hosting this spectacular concert which is set to be the zenith musical event of the 175th celebration calendar. I implore all alumni, staff and students to get themselves to the Cathedral to witness this event with the largest gathering of singers and orchestra the University has ever mustered. Don't miss it!" says Hannah Curtain – Creative Director of Foundation Music and Music Theatre graduate 2006.
