Visions from the Tower of Song is a one day symposium celebrating Leonard Cohen's 80th birthday. Sylvie Simmons, Leonard Cohen's authorised biographer, is the keynote speaker.
About the author:
Sylvie Simmons is a renowned British music journalist and an award-winning writer. Her books include fiction (the short story collection Too Weird for Ziggy) and biography: Serge Gainsbourg: A Fistful of Gitanes, which JG Ballard named as a personal favourite; Reflections in Broken Glass, an acclaimed portrait of Neil Young; and most recently, the international best-seller I'm Your Man: The Life of Leonard Cohen.
Sylvie is also a recording artist and performer. After three years writing her Cohen biography, she took her book and a ukulele on year-long world tour, on which she read, talked about Cohen and sang his songs, alone or with special musical guests. An album of her own songs, Sylvie, will be released in October.
About the book:
Singer, songwriter, poet, novelist, icon - and still, at 80 years old, writing songs and performing to sold-out crowds, Leonard Cohen is one of the most important and enduring artists of our time. Since his first book of poetry in 1956, and his first record album in 1967, he has explored all the major issues of human life - sex, God, power, redemption, loneliness, longing and love - not just in his art, but in his life. A devout Jew, an ordained Buddhist monk, a celebrated ladies man who spent decades battling and finally defeating depression, his story is complex and profound. I'm Your Man: The Life of Leonard Cohen by Sylvie Simmons, has been hailed unamimously as the definitive biography - a nuanced and deeply insightful portrait that explores every strand of his life and work. The 600-page book draws on a wealth of research, including interviews with Cohen's muses, monks, rabbis, friends, fellow musicians, as well as access to Cohen's archives and to Cohen himself, who gave the author his support, and whose presence infuses these pages.
