Dr Sam Scallan
Sam is a Research Fellow with the Wessex School of General Practice. She oversees a portfolio of evaluation and development projects supporting the work of the Wessex School of General Practice, working closely with the Associate Deans. Sam has extensive experience of designing research projects, notably looking at in GP specialist training and CPD. Her published areas of interest include:strategic development of training and CPD linked to workforce planning, quality assurance of educational programmes, evaluation of innovative training schemes, and research governance and practice. In addition to her research interests, she supervises and supports GP Fellows [n.6] undertaking project work whilst in a GP attachment. Sam is also experienced in managing junior Research Associates. She is a commissioned author of literature reviews for medical education conferences and a reviewer for a number of leading journals. She holds an Honorary Fellowship at the University of Winchester, where she is an Associate Tutor to the medical educator Masters programme and supervises PhD students.
Dr Mark Rickenbach
Mark Rickenbach has worked in the NHS for twenty five years in both the hospital acute setting and the community setting. He is currently an Associate Dean leading on the quality of postgraduate medical education and research for 2500 trainees within the Wessex Deanery area of Southern England. This links with his role as an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Winchester. Mark worked with the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) since its inception in 2005 with a focus on developing the UK system for trainee and trainer feedback. This role continues under the General Medical Council (GMC).
As a general practitioner/family physician he is based in a practice near Southampton leading eleven doctors in the care of 15,000 patients. He also works as a GP trainer, GP appraiser and GP mentor, alongside his role as a supervisor of PhD students and research fellows. Mark holds fellowships with the Royal College of Physicians, Royal college of General Practitioners and the Higher Education Academy. His PhD, recently published as a book, looked at ways to improve the quality of education and sits alongside publications and presentations on clinical and educational research. Mark's research has both a clinical and practice based element and covers areas such as asthma inhaler fullness, counselling, appraisal and education. His current focus is on supporting the professional educator to reflect and develop their own practice using feedback and systems for clinical and non clinical information.
