Centre for Research into Language

The Centre for Research into Language brings together the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and Education Studies in the united interest in language

CRiL is one of the University's two cross-faculty research centres, the other being the Centre for Gender Studies. CRiL provides a platform for the University and interested members of the wider community to share knowledge and expertise surrounding the English language and linguistics in general through stimulating seminars and colloquia.

CRiL hosts guest lectures from leading experts, research seminars and workshops. It facilitates special-interest initiatives such as the Old English Reading Group (see below), and student conferences related to language study (see below). We welcome participation from staff and postgraduate students from across the University and from the broader local and regional community. For more information, contact any of the members listed below.

Gender and language: theory and practice, by Dr Lia Litosseliti, City University London

In this talk, which took place on Wednesday 1 February 2012, Lia Litosseliti introduced the key theoretical approaches that have shaped and continue to shape the gender and language field. She began with past theoretical approaches, concentrating on a critique of the notion of 'gender differences', before moving on to discuss the current emphasis upon constructionist and discursive approaches. The discussion drew on examples from media texts and advertising to illustrate how gender can be constructed in discourse, in theory and in practice.

Lia Litosseliti is a Senior Lecturer in Linguistics and Programme Director in the Department of Language and Communication Science at City University London. She is the author of Using focus groups in research (2003) and Gender and language: theory and practice (2006); co-editor of Gender identity and discourse analysis (2002) and Gender and language research methodologies (2008) and editor of Research methods in Linguistics (2010). Lia Litosseliti is also Associate Editor of the journal Gender and Language and Vice-President of the International Gender and Language Association (IGALA).

This seminar was part of the interdisciplinary Centre for Gender Studies research seminar series 2011-12. For more information, visit the Centre for Gender Studies website.
