Increasingly media education is being recognised as a key strategy for building capacity and sustainable development. Media education activities, including the training of journalists and media professionals, media literacy campaigns or the training of teachers are seen as vital steps in the establishment of civil society and sustainable economic activity.

The focus of this symposium will be to critically examine the look at the some of the intricate links between the media, media education and development practice.

Topics may include:

  • The training and development of media professionals and journalists;
  • The role media plays in development - the ‘function’ of media in civil society in developing countries;
  • Media education and civil society – the development of citizenship;
  • Media Literacy programmes;
  • The strengthening of the capacities of communication institutions, 
  • Raising awareness of best use of communication resources.
