Nursing Studies (top-up) degree has been developed in response to the changes occurring in nurse education. These changes will mean that only degree level pre-registration nursing programmes will be offered within the UK. The programme is designed for existing nurses who wish to top-up to gain a degree the opportunity to develop their critical thinking skills in the increasingly diverse and complex climate of future healthcare delivery.

Entry requirements: All entrants need to be on Part 1 of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Nursing Register with a minimum of 12 months clinical experience and currently working in practice. Applicants should hold a Diploma or a Diploma with Advanced Studies in Nursing (or APEL equivalent), GSCE English and Maths at grade C or above, or equivalent and be computer literate with internet access. Applicants will be selected following an interview.

Programme Content

This academic degree is a flexible/distance learning programme of study. Students have an individually tailored pathway which matches their personal and professional needs.

• Care of the older patient
• Dementia care management

Learning and Teaching

All students are allocated a personal tutor who is experienced in the delivery of flexible/distance learning programmes, and support of students who wish to follow this route of learning. 

Assessment

Assessments may include academic assignments and online presentations, annotated literature searches and assignments using multi-media. In the final year, students complete a 10,000 word piece of secondary research on a subject of their choice.

Careers

The programme has been developed in line with the Knowledge and Skills Framework (2004) which will aid your personal career planning in line with Professional Development Planning (PDP).

Healthcare delivery in the UK is changing as health needs become more complex. Nurses of the future will need to practise differently and will need to be better equipped to be able to care for people with complex physical needs. This means that they have to be able to justify their actions based on evidence. On completion of this top-up degree the candidate will be able to demonstrate knowledge and have gained the higher level skills needed to face these new health care challenges.
