This certificate is open to all – those with a general interest in the study of theology and religion, teachers, clergy, lay readers, lay pastors and caring professionals or anyone. No prior knowledge of theology or religious studies is expected. The Certificate can be taken as standalone study or for mature students as a route onto a full or part-time BA Theology and Religious Studies or BA Ethics and Spirituality taken with another subject as part of the Combined Honours framework at Winchester.
Students registered on a full-time Winchester programme may take the Certificate in addition to their main programme at no additional cost. For all other students, modular fees apply and financial support is available. Details are available from the Programme Leader.
The Certificate is awarded upon completion of four approved modules in Theology and/or Religious Studies. Modules are credited (15 credits each) and can be taken at the student’s own pace, for example one or two modules per year. Modules are entry level – Level 4 – and run on a rolling programme. Contact the Programme Leader for details of what modules are running this year.
Modules available for evening study are:
• On Being Good
• Who is Jesus?
• Religion in an Age of Terror?
• God in the City
• Introducing Sacred Texts Modules available for daytime study are:
• Approaches to Theology
• Themes and Issues in the Study of Religion
• Approaches to World Religions
Each module consists of two hours of student/tutor contact per week during the day or evening over 12 weeks.
Daytime teaching takes place in conjunction with undergraduate teaching and students studying in this way can complete the Certificate more quickly. Evening teaching will also take place in conjunction with undergraduate teaching.
Assessment is by coursework (for example essays or book reviews) or by a combination of coursework and examination.
