Programme Content

The University of Winchester supports the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education. A guiding theme of the FdA Management programme is the need for managers and leaders to generate sustainable value for their businesses and society at large, and to work for an inclusive and sustainable global economy.

Designed with strong employer involvement, the aim of this programme is to provide vocational study that meets the needs of individuals and employers. The skills and knowledge developed are recognised by employers as being of immense value for those working in a variety of supervisory, management or leadership roles. The programme will benefit those aspiring to their first team leader role or who are already working at a managerial level but require a theoretical framework to enhance practical experience.

Throughout this programme all modules aim to focus on current management issues and challenges. These encourage students to manage performance, consider innovative ways to implement change and further develop management skills and leadership potential.

Students learn the main business management functions, for example how to identify and analyse elements of marketing; how to understand key financial reports; how to develop and appraise employees, and to manage self development in a changing world. Students also develop personal skills such as how to enhance communication skills, maximise time and resources to achieve results, and explore how organisations increase efficiency and effectiveness through the use of project management and sustainable approaches.

Learning and Teaching

The programme adopts an innovative approach to learning and teaching through combining traditional lectures, seminars, e-learning and tutorials with a programme of work-based activity and involvement. Professionals from the business world share their experiences through specialist lectures interspersed in the programme.

Tutorial and online support provides an opportunity to discuss new ideas and plan study around work-life balance. Students become self-managing and increasingly confident in their thinking by developing the skills of reflection and a personal development plan. The Winchester Business School provides excellent resources which enhance student learning and development.

Assessment

Assessment is work-related and relevant to the working lives of students on the programme. Emphasis is placed on evidence gathered in the workplace, typically through practical exercises, reflective practice, portfolios, report writing, case studies, time-limited examinations and presentations.  Support is given through study skills seminars to enable students to develop their learning skills base.

Careers

Professional development
Work-based studies are a core feature of the programme. These enable students to utilise their own ‘real world’ experiences effectively, basing their assignments on aspects of their job. Throughout the programme students negotiate and undertake professional development in the field of management in conjunction with, and supported by, their tutor and workplace mentor.

The programme aims to develop knowledge, skills and abilities to become a competent and qualified manager. Upon successful completion of the programme, students are eligible to ‘top-up’ their Foundation Degree qualification to obtain the BA (Hons) Business Management at the University of Winchester.
