Mentoring Students in Practice Programme - February entry at University of Winchester

The Mentoring Students in Practice programme was developed in response to the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) requirement for those involved in supporting and assessing learning in clinical practice to have met the NMC requirement of mentoring in practice. The programme prepares students to undertake the role of mentor, having achieved a level of confidence and competence in their ability to assess the practice of others.

Entry requirements: All entrants must be a first level Registered Nurse, Midwife or Health Visitor with a minimum of 12 months’ experience, currently working in practice with the opportunity to support learning in practice. Entrants must also have developed their own knowledge, skills and competency beyond that of registration through Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Programme Content

The Mentoring Students in Practice programme covers the following areas:

• Establishing effective working relationships
• Facilitation of learning
• Assessment and accountability
• Evaluation of learning
• Creating an environment for learning
• Context of practice
• Evidenced-based leadership

Students develop a knowledge of and reflective approach to mentoring and facilitating learning in healthcare practice.

Modules

Modules incorporate:

• Tutor support
• Use of open learning materials
• Student-managed learning
• Practice over a three-month period (11 months in 60 credit module)
• Support from a practice mentor

Learning and Teaching

All students are allocated a personal tutor who has received training in the use of open learning materials and in the support of students who wish to follow this route of learning. The open learning tutor will visit students in practice to ensure that they are able to access the required experince with appropriate support.

Assessment

Assessment includes a Reflective Portfolio of a minimum of 2,000 words; an assignment of 2,000 words; and a demonstration of competence in meeting practice outcomes.
