Undergraduate entry qualifications

First year entry

Students whose first language is not English may be asked to provide evidence of English Language ability when applying to the University of Winchester. The requirement for admission to undergraduate degree programmes is a minimum score of 6.0 in IELTS (International English Language Teaching System) including a minimum score of 6.0 in Academic Writing, or an equivalent qualification (for example 560 in Paper-based TOEFL, 220 in Computer-based TOEFL).

All students applying for a Bachelors (BA/BSc/LLB) degree at Winchester should hold one of the following qualifications:

  • Holders of the National Senior High School Certificate, Chinese University Entrance Examination or Matriculation Examination who have also successfully completed a suitable foundation programme in a relevant subject area
  • Successful completion of one year at a recognised university in China with an overall average of 75% or above
  • Satisfactorily completion of a suitable one year UK Foundation course, normally with 60% and above (to include UK syllabus foundation courses taught in China)

Second and third year entry

Students with the one of the following qualifications may be eligible for second or in some rare cases third year entry:

  • Holders of a Diploma from Specialised College may be eligible for second year entry in a suitable subject area
  • Students with a University College Graduation Diploma or a Graduation Diploma from Radio & TV Universities/Spare-time Universities/Training Colleges for Administrative cadres/Higher Education Self-Study Examinations or Adult Education may be considered for entry into the second year of an undergraduate degree
  • Students with a three year diploma (Da Zhuan) may be considered for direct entry to second or third year entry

Personal statement

Undergraduate students must supply the University with a detailed personal statement explaining why you want to join the University of Winchester and why the programme you are applying for interests you. You will also need to supply the University of Winchester with an academic reference which should be on official headed paper and notarised where possible.

Postgraduate entry qualifications

Students whose first language is not English may be asked to provide evidence of English Language ability when applying to the University of Winchester. The requirement for admission to postgraduatedegree programmes is a minimum score of 6.5 in IELTS (International English Language Teaching System) including a minimum score of 6.5 in Academic Writing, or an equivalent qualification (for example 580 in Paper-based TOEFL, 237 in Computer-based TOEFL).

All students applying for a Masters degree (MA/MSc/MBA) at Winchester should hold one of the following qualifications:

  • A Bachelors degrees from a National University with a GPA 3.0 from 4.0 or an overall average grade of 75% or above
    We request an overall of 85% or above for students from private colleges
  • Students with a Masters degrees from another institution or with grades below those required from a Bachelors degree (as above) with no work experience
  • Students with very high results in a Bachelors degree from another institution may be considered if they have two to three years relevant full-time work experience
  • Applicants without a first degree but with five to seven years relevant work experience may also be considered on an individual basis for some Masters programmes
