Certificate in English for International Students
A one-year programme designed for international students.
The Certificate in English for International Students is a full-time programme with fifteen contact hours per week. Its main purpose is to provide you with the opportunity to experience living and studying abroad in an English speaking environment and being immersed into a new cultural experience. The programme will help you to develop your speaking and listening skills so that you can communicate effectively in everyday situations as well as improving your reading and writing skills. It is also expected to contribute significantly to your overall maturity and confidence.
The programme consists of four modules:
- General English
- Functional English
- Oral Practice
- British Culture
How will I be taught?
You will be taught in one group containing a maximum of 16 students. Teaching and learning occurs through formal classes, in which various teaching methods are used. Students will do class work in pairs, in small groups or as part of a whole class. You will be set a considerable amount of work to do outside of taught classes, involving both the completion of assignments and independent study tasks. The main part of the teaching programme will normally take place for at least three hours on each weekday in semester time.
Your studies will be assessed mainly through coursework but you will also have regular tests. To achieve credits for each module you will need to pass it and have an attendance figure of no less than 80%.
Is there a social programme?
There are some special events organised for international students studying English at the University of Winchester that include parties for international students and excursions to destinations such as London, Oxford and Stonehenge as well as theatre visits to see musicals like Chicago and the Lion King. There has also been an annual trip to Disneyland in Paris. In addition, there is a wide range of sports clubs and societies that are available through the Student Union for which Wednesday afternoons in semester-time are kept free.
What is the cost of the programme?
The programme fee for 2012/2013 is £6,720. One semester of study on the CEIS programme is £3,360. The costs cover academic feesand a general English course book and workbook
University accommodation fees are charged separately, depending on the accommodation chosen. These fees are not subsidised out of academic fees.
What are the dates of the programme?
These are basically the same as the standard academic year: Monday 24th September to Thursday 24th May 2011 There are 30 weeks of taught classes and assessment. The programme begins with an obligatory four-day induction and orientation programme, beginning the week before the start of the academic year.
- Semester 1: 24th September 2012 - 25th January 2013
- Semester 2: 28th January 2013 - 24th May 2013
