Summer Schools
A four week programme for international students to experience living and studying in an English speaking environment.
6th August - 1st September 2012
The programme will give you the opportunity to develop your speaking and listening skills as well as improving your reading and writing skills. Lessons generally take place on weekday mornings and cover the following areas:
- Language in use
- Functional English
- British life and culture
- News and current affairs
- Excursion preparation
How will I be taught?
You will be placed in a group with other students of a similar level and taught by at least two teachers. Students will do class work in pairs, in small groups or as part of a whole class. You will be set a limited amount of work to do outside of taught classes.
You will be assessed through your coursework but you may also have some short tests. You will receive a report at the end of the course and a certificate of attendance. You are naturally expected to attend 100% of the taught programme.

Excursions
There are also five full day excursions arranged to London, Oxford, Bath, Salisbury/ Stonehenge and Brighton on three Saturdays and two Wednesdays.
Is there a social programme?
Apart from the scheduled day excursions, additional afternoon and evening activities will be organised by the summer school team. As well as having their own ideas they will try to accommodate your wishes. For example, last year students chose to go to the local sports centre, to the local cinema, to nearby towns and local pubs as well as to a musical in London. There will also be a social evening with fun and games and a farewell party!
What accommodation is available?
Students are encouraged to take the opportunity to stay with an English family during their time here, where you will have the opportunity to find out about English family life as well as practice your English. The University also has very good self-catering accommodation in an award-winning student village, situated less than ten minutes from the main campus. This will give you the opportunity to try cooking some real English food!
What does the course fee include?
The course fee covers the following costs:
- Academic programme and administration
- Accommodation
- University of Winchester social programme
- Transfers to and from the airport (for a minimum group of 5)
The fee for the academic programme and administration includes all materials required for study purposes. Students in home stay accommodation will be provided with a bus pass if their journeys to and from college necessitate using public transport on a daily basis. Students in home stay accommodation will be provided with full board, that is, bed and two meals in the home each day. Packed lunches will be provided for home stay students Monday to Saturday.
