The courses usually last 12 months, although some students choose to take extra time to complete their dissertation.

The taught elements of the course are usually organised around small group discussions, or for some courses by practical work, and are usually evaluated by assessment of a written assignment.

All students work closely with the Masters programme director and other academic members of staff and are allocated an academic advisor, who will supervise them whilst they are completing their dissertation.

Whether at a Masters or Doctoral level, research programmes involve individual supervision by a faculty member who has an interest in the topic. This emphasis on personal guidance and independent study is a key characteristic feature of research degrees in the UK.

We offer research opportunities to MPhil/PhD level in the following subject areas: archaeology, education, English, history, arts, religious studies, theology. Full details are given in the Postgraduate Prospectus and in the research degrees area of our online prospectus and database.
