Undergraduate study
Full details about Winchester's undergraduate courses areprovided in the Courses A - Z.
Study options
Undergraduate degree programmes normally last three years, although our Primary Teaching degree is of four years duration. The programmes have a modular structure, allowing students either to specialise in one subject or to combine two fields of study from a wide range of options to suit their own needs and interests.
Single and Combined Honours degree programmes are three years in duration, whilst Diploma in Higher Education (DipHE) are two years in duration.
Learning and teaching
You may find, as many international students do, that the teaching methods used by lecturers are very different to any you have been used to. The relationship between staff and students is often relaxed and informal and a high importance is placed on students’ abilities to take responsibility for their education and organise their own thinking. You will be expected to read widely, to research thoroughly and to question what you learn at every opportunity.
A degree programme consists of a series of lectures, seminars and tutorials. In addition to timetabled activities much emphasis is placed on private study and you will be expected to spend at least as much time studying on your own as being taught.
Lecture classes vary in size from 15 students upwards, though there will be fewer large lecture classes after the first year. Seminars and tutorials are usually much smaller and often students are asked to prepare work in advance for these sessions and then to explore their ideas with the lecturer and fellow students.
Tutorial support
All students are allocated an academic advisor, who will help the students with academic issues and support them throughout their studies at the University.
