Hands protecting a small planet Earth

Welcome to the Department of Responsible Management and Leadership

The Department of Responsible Management and Leadership has a well-established and growing portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in business management. These include the Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA), Executive MBA (MBA), and MSc International Business, as well as undergraduate degrees in Business Management, and Business Management with Enterprise and Innovation. We also offer undergraduate and postgraduate degree apprenticeship programmes. Department staff contribute significantly to the University of Winchester Business School research agenda with many of their outputs featuring in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework submission. The Responsible Management theme features in the research, knowledge exchange and teaching activities of staff whether it be in the context of Leadership, Human Resource Management, Business Strategy, Design Thinking, Sustainable Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Enterprise or Innovation.

The Department is proud to have been an early adopter in 2008 (13th in the UK) of the United Nations backed Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME). PRME has played a central role in shaping, from its formation, the Business School’s strategies and now the University's 2020-2030 Strategic Vision that specifically supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Members of the Department have played a key role in the development of PRME globally and locally with the Regional PRME Chapter. See Winchester's latest PRME report. In January 2016, Winchester became a Global PRME Champion for 2016/17, were reappointed in 2018 for 2018/19 and again in 2020/21. Our teaching programmes give emphasis to authentic leadership, long-term value creation, innovation and change, employee wellbeing, sustainability, ethics and social responsibility.

The majority of staff have experience of professional practice and relevant industry experience which they use to enliven their teaching and provide relevant and impactful research. This provides the base for the attraction of external project funding and a rapidly growing PhD and professional doctorate student community supervised by departmental staff. Professional body membership is high amongst staff including Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs, Chartered Management Institute, Royal Society of Arts (RSA), British Academy of Management and the British Psychological Society Register of Psychometric Testers. The majority of staff have Fellowship or Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

The Department of Responsible Management and Leadership is home to two Centres: the Hoare Centre for Responsible Management which proactively contributes towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), and the PeopleScapes Research Centre, an interdisciplinary centre exploring society-environment interactions, from cultural heritage management to sustainable landscape management.

The department has developed partnerships with local and national organisation’s that provide opportunities for students to undertake placements and to attend talks by employers to enhance their career development. There are also opportunities for students to develop their own business ideas through enterprise modules within their programme and by joining the Enterprise Club, as well as through CEDI, for creative digital students.
